Condemn the State Government and NPCIL
Trampling upon People’s Constitutional Democratic Rights
People of Madban, Mithgavane, Karel, Niveli in Taluka Rajapur are committed to oppose the proposed 10,000 MWe Jaitapur nuclear power “park” despite police atrocities.
The state government has intentionally overlooked the resolutions passed by the Panchayat Committees as well as Zilla Parishad. People’s demand is to cancel the nuclear power project and to focus on ‘renewable energy sources’ for sustainability of the sensitive biodiversity of the region. They have been waging a peaceful, democratic struggle against the state government actions. They have refused to accept the compensation awarded by the government.
The state government intentionally refusing to listen to the people’s voice, forcibly went ahead to acquire the land under the draconian land acquisition act. They unleashed brutal police actions terrorizing people.
The environmental impact assessment report for this sensitive and complex nuclear power project is yet to be finalized. The public hearing is not yet conducted and concluded. In absence of these, the environmental clearance from Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) is much further away.
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) authorities gave statements to the press saying they will soon start the project activities at the site and the activities will be conducted under tight security provided by state / central reserve police.
Before even fulfilling very important mandatory processes, since April 1, 2010, NPCIL engaged itself into contour mapping & geological sampling on the land forcibly acquired by the state government and purportedly handed over to NPCIL. These activities are being carried out around Niveli under heavy security provided by the police; 60~70 police are everyday accompanying the survey team of 4~5 people. Police can be seen posted in the villages along the road. Such actions amount to terrorizing people protesting against the proposed project.
The actions taken by NPCIL are blatantly violating people’s constitutional right. Also it clearly shows that MoEF clearance to the project is taken for granted by them.

We strongly denounce the state government for blatant violation of the constitutional rights of people and also denounce terrorizing tactics adopted by the NPCIL.

We demand that NPCIL authorities must immediately call a halt to any attempt to conduct any physical activity on the land purportedly handed over to them by the state government till all mandatory constitutional and democratic processes of public hearing, satisfactory resolution of all the objections are transparently concluded and the final decision to grant or refuse permission to this nuclear project from the Ministry of Environment and Forest is released prior to initiating any action, how so ever small, related to the project.
